The following is a summary of the Inner West Council Tree Preservation Order, which is now covered by the Inner West Council Tree Management DCP 2020 (Development Control Plan) to identify works that can be done without council approval and exempt tree species. This overview is only a guide. Please reference the complete Inner West Council Tree Management DCP 2020 for more detailed information. Care should be also taken to check the property zoning and that the tree is not protected for Ecological or Heritage reasons (i.e Heritage conservation zones and Endangered Species or Habitats).
Inner West Council Tree Management DCP allows for the following tree removal or tree pruning works WITHOUT council permission. For all works outside of this scope, council approval in writing is required.
- Canopy lifting to 2.5m above ground level and selective crown pruning to achieve a 3m roof or building face clearance (please check DCP Section C2 for exemptions to this i.e biodiversity and heritage conservation areas or heritage trees)
- Any tree less than 6m in height (4m stem length for palms), a canopy spread less than 3m and with a trunk diameter less than 300mm at ground level (unless a Heritage conservation site, biodiversity site or provides habitat for native animals).
- Pruning of deadwood that does not have hollows or provide habitat.
- Pruning of any tree listed in table below provided works done in accordance with AS 4373 – Pruning of Amenity Trees. For removal of any of these species an Inner West Council MINOR TREE WORKS REQUEST needs to be submitted and approved prior to works, this includes the removal of dead trees as well. (All other tree species require a regular tree removal and tree pruning council application).
